Starting Betsy's journey: where the adventure truly begins

Join me as we revisit the very first steps of Betsy's transformation. This is where a childhood dream of freedom on the open road began to take shape, proving that some journeys are worth every moment of planning and hard work. Discover the inspiration behind bringing Betsy back to life and the vision that continues to drive us forward.

A nostalgic start: remembering childhood freedom

My motivation for starting Betsy's restoration stems from cherished memories of motorhome holidays during my childhood. The sheer freedom of going wherever we wanted, waking up to new views, and the open road ahead created a deep sense of nostalgia that I want to share. This journey is about recapturing that liberation and making new memories on wheels.

The initial spark: buying and dreaming

A few years ago, Betsy came into my life, a vintage motorhome just waiting for her next adventure. The very first steps involved endless planning, envisioning how we would transform her, and meticulously listing all the jobs that needed doing. It was a time of pure excitement, dreaming up the perfect look and functionality to make her truly ours.

Breaking barriers: living life with Betsy

Through Betsy's journey, I hope to connect with others by showing how liberating having a motorhome can be. It’s about demonstrating that having fibromyalgia or experiencing the symptoms of menopause shouldn't be a hurdle to living out your dreams. This project is a testament to embracing adventure and finding joy, regardless of life's challenges.

Starting from the beginning

As far back as I can remember, we always had a motorhome of some sort. Growing up, my sister and I slept in 1970s pop-tops with roll-out bunks as we travelled all over the country, creating some of my favourite memories. Dad’s cars were always called Betsy, so when we got a motorhome, she naturally became Big Betsy—our adventure on wheels. Whenever we came home from school and found her parked outside while Mum loaded her with supplies, we were beside ourselves with excitement. We would race indoors, throw down our schoolbags, change into clean travelling clothes and anxiously wait for Dad to return from work.

So, when a few years ago, Dad decided that his motorhoming days were over and told us his current van was going up for sale. Of course, I had to snap her up. I knew she was an old girl, but I was sure that, with a little TLC, we could make her gorgeous again. We had already chosen the perfect name: Betsy. I dropped the ‘Big’ because I didn’t want to give her a complex.

Once we got her home, we gave her a thorough inspection. Unfortunately, we discovered damp around the cab bed. Further investigation revealed that water had been getting in through the roof, leaving the timber and lining in the bed area badly soaked. We had no choice but to strip everything back and let it dry out.
